   ELU 1 - New legislation coming into effect   

Just to remind you of two important pieces of legislation that take effect this month:

* The Civil Partnership Act 2004, gives same-sex couples the right to enter into civil partnerships or “gay marriages”. It also provides protection against discrimination in employment on the grounds of being in a civil partnership. The protection is the equivalent of the right not to be treated less favourably on grounds of being married.

* The Disability Discrimination Act 2005  the main provisions of which are that:

o       those with HIV, cancer and multiple sclerosis are treated as disabled from the date of diagnosis;

o       there is no longer a requirement that a mental impairment must be clinically well recognised for it to be capable of being a disability for purposes of disability discrimination.
