   ELU 1 - New legislation coming into effect   

Just to remind you of two important pieces of legislation that take effect this month:

 The Civil Partnership Act 2004, gives same-sex couples the right to enter into civil partnerships or “gay marriages”. It also provides protection against discrimination in employment on the grounds of being in a civil partnership. The protection is the equivalent of the right not to be treated less favourably on grounds of being married.

 The Disability Discrimination Act 2005  the main provisions of which are that:

o       those with HIV, cancer and multiple sclerosis are treated as disabled from the date of diagnosis;

o       there is no longer a requirement that a mental impairment must be clinically well recognised for it to be capable of being a disability for purposes of disability discrimination.
